For the third annual Center on Contemporary Art Heaven & Earth outdoor exhibit, Teresa created “Holdfast” to explore themes of habitat protection and human interaction with nature. Using reused plastic shopping bags, she created fused plastic salmon “pillows” that anchor to a rock – recalling the root-like tendrils seaweed sprout to stabilize themselves. Seaweed, actually algae, provide habitat for young salmon and hiding places for other beach critters including sea stars and newly molted crab. Seeing the plastic salmon shapes floating in the water at higher tides evokes images of the Pacific Trash Vortex – an indicator of what damage we are capable of creating through neglect. “Holdfast” interacts with the water, changing as tides ebb and flow, and reminds us that as we interact with nature we have the power to impact, for better or worse, our natural world.

Color Theory

waiting for the moon
as the sun awakes
the mountain sits uncaring
the grass bows to the wind
the sky is fickle
orange tastes like steak
blue smells like death
and red acts like a spoiled child
a long day
a longer night
here I am
take what you will
I’m left with nothing
purple is asleep in the corner
and yellow went out for more beer

I saw the envelope on the table. I’d just taken a few pastel pieces to be juried on Saturday; does a response 3 days later mean it’s likely to be good or bad news? I took a drink of wine. I opened the letter…. and skipped right to the second paragraph where the “We regret to inform you” part usually starts. I think I squealed, as instead much happier tidings appeared! Not sure when yet, but I’ll be exhibiting my pastel/mixed media work at the University Unitarian Church Gallery sometime in the next year. Stay tuned for exhibit dates! Ah, acceptance is really a beautiful word.

"Nothing is more abstract than reality."

I love the soft gray scenes in the Northwest, when the fog obscures the line between land, water and sky. Tonight at my Color for Painters class Kimberly Trowbridge presented some amazing examples of modern and contemporary artsts who have made whole careers out of soft shades of gray.

One of my favorite artists discussed was Giorgio Morandi, a modern painter (1890-1964) from Bologna, Italy. His paintngs blur the line between realism and abstraction through use of soft neutrals, focus on form and lost edges. Morandi stated that “nothng is more abstract than reality” and when you look at his paintings you can start to forget the “what” of the objects and just enjoy the subtle rythms, colors and contrasts between the shapes. All things are relative, so is a curve just a curve or is it a “bottle”? Does it matter?

I decided to try creating a painting Morandi-style to see what I could come up with; see below.

Vases, 16"x12", Oil on Canvas
